Modelling Stigmergic Gene Transfer

چکیده
We consider an information-theoretic model studying the conditions when a separation between the dynamics of a ’proto-cell’ and its proto-symbolic representation becomes beneficial in terms of preserving the proto-cell’s information in a noisy environment. In particular, we are interested in understanding the behaviour at the “error threshold” level which, in our case, turns out to be a whole “error interval”. We separate the phenomena into a “waste” and a “loss” component; the “waste” measures “packaging” information which envelops the proto-cell’s information, but itself does not contain any information of interest, the “loss” measures how much of the proto-symbolically encoded information is actually lost. We observe that transitions in the waste/loss functions correspond to the boundaries of the “error interval”. Secondly, we study whether and how different protocells can share such information via a joint code, even if they have slightly different individual dynamics. Implications for the emergence of biological genetic code are discussed.

When Ants Attack: Security Issues for Stigmergic Systems
Stigmergic systems solve global problems by using indirect communication mediated by an environment. Because they are localized and dynamic, stigmergic systems are self-organizing, robust and adaptive. These properties are useful for creating survivable systems, but stigmergic systems also raise new security concerns. Indirect communication makes systems more vulnerable in an open and hostile e...

To know is to cognize, to cognize is to be a culturally bounded, rationality-bounded and environmentally located agent. Knowledge and cognition are thus dual aspects of human sociality. If social epistemology has the formation, acquisition, mediation, transmission and dissemination of knowledge in complex communities of knowers as its subject matter, then its third party character is essentiall...
متن کاملSensitivity and Stigmergy in Agent-Based Systems
A computational metaheuristic combining stigmergic behavior and gradual pheromone sensitivity of agents is proposed. Resulting multi-agent models can potentially address complex real-world problems particularly combinatorial optimization NP-hard problems. The new model employs agents able to communicate both directly and in a stigmergic manner. Stigmergic communication is based on different rea...

This paper presents some of the results of the simulation in the radiation section of an industrial boiler using an advanced mathematical model. Calculations are described for the flow, heat transfer, and chemical reaction processes occurring within a gas-fired cylindrical furnace. The calculation procedure is a two dimensional one in which the main hydrodynamic variables are the velocity and s...
